MoreAssassin’s Creed Odysseyleaks are coming through the pipeline ahead of the game’s likely official unveiling at E3. Last night saw the leak of over 15Assassin’s Creed Odysseyscreenshots, revealing the game’s map, skill tree, weapon and armor system, and so much more. In fact, these screenshots spoil a lot more than meets the eye. We may now know the base story and setting forAssassin’s Creed Odyssey.

The one major point of conflict shown within the new screenshots is a war between the city-state of Sparta, to which theSpartan protagonistbelongs, and Athens. We see the player fighting enemies bearing shields with the Greek god Athena’s owl, a symbol for Athens. And in assorted screenshots mission objectives clearly state “Kill Athenians” and “Destroy Athenian War Supplies.” It appears thatAssassin’s Creed Odysseystarts with rebellions against the Athens-led Delian League within the Aegean Sea.

The timeline forAssassin’s Creed Odysseyremains somewhat difficult to hammer down to an exact year. But it’s clear what happening is likely part of the build-up to the Peloponnesian War, which starts in 431 BC. Rebellions against the Delian League in the Aegean Sea, which is shown to beAssassin’s Creed Odyssey’s setting from the map screenshot, play a key role in the war between Sparta’s Peloponnesian League and Athens' Delian League. The game could be set later, closer to 404 BC, as the Aegean rebellions led to the decimation of the Delian League, the destruction of Athens'  navy, and ultimately Athens' surrender.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s leaked screenshots reveal plenty of other exciting information, too, beyond just setting. There appears to be a new battle feature, pitting one army against another. Eagle Vision returns, allowing the player to see through the eyes of a bird, taking the measure of encampments or battlefields. Crafting appears to have returned. AndOdysseyseems to have a feature allowing the player to customize a limited selection of abilities they’re able to use in battle. This definitely seems like aunique approach toAssassin’s Creed, for better or worse.

The one lingering question seems to be why Ubisoft decided to subtitle thisAssassin’s Creed"Odyssey." The events of the Peloponnesian War take place well after the time period often associated with the events of Homer’s epic poem,The Odyssey. And a majority of the events of that book don’t take place in the Aegean Sea. Perhaps Ubisoft just thoughtOdysseya fitting name for a game set near Greece.

We’ll find out all of the official details onAssassin’s Creed Odysseyin the days to come, asUbisoft’s E3 press conferenceairs and the convention begins. The Peloponnesian War is only just getting started.
