An upcoming update for the relaxing island life simulatorAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsis giving players avariety of new features to celebrate the end of summer. However, one of the background features of this update is the long-requested ability to backup save and island data.

Just this morning, Nintendo posted a video showing off “Wave 2” of the Summer Update forAnimal Crossing: New Horizons. This new update will bring customizable fireworks shows every Sunday in August as well as bringing back Luna fromNew Leafto allow Nintendo Switch Online members to visit and create dream islands. Nintendo Switch Online members are also getting a feature that is sure to please many players: the ability to backup their game’s save and island data.

Even beforeAnimal Crossing: New Horizonslaunched, players have had major concerns over the game’s save backup system works. A big sticking point for many players is that thegame does not support cloud saving, a feature that has become much more ubiquitous in today’s consoles and digital distribution services like Steam. While cloud saving is still not in the game, players will soon be able to backup their saves and island in case something goes seriously wrong and their data is lost.

Near the tail end of the video, Nintendo announces an Island Backup Restoration Service for those with a Nintendo Service Online membership, a major upgrade to the game’sprevious method of restoring save data once. Nintendo Switch Online members can enable the new island backup service, which automatically uploads island and user save data to the internet at certain times. If your Nintendo Switch system is lost or damaged, you may be able to recover your island paradise as long as you’ve enabled island backup. In the event of loss or damage, contact Nintendo Consumer Support about restoring the island and user save data on your new or repaired Nintendo Switch system. After your island data and individual player data is restored, you can get back to building your island community.

While it isn’t the cloud saving features players have been hoping for, this is still great news for players worried about losing their progress. As a series,Animal Crossingis one of those games thatplayers can easily sink thousands of hoursinto, and losing all that progress can be devastating.
