Summary

Some newly-revealed concept art for the upcomingStar WarsseriesAhsokaon Disney+ now finally gives fans their first solid look at a ship that’s only been teased so far. The flagship of Lars Mikkelsen’s Grand Admiral Thrawn looks about as glorious and artistically done as its owner, leaving one to wonder, just how big is this thing?

Fans were immediately excited whenMikkelsen was announced to be playing Thrawn inAhsoka, as he’d already voiced the character to nearly unanimous praise for several years on the animated seriesStar Wars Rebels. But since the upcoming series is in live-action, it offers a chance for some truly spectacular set pieces that just wouldn’t have hit the same way in CGI form. One such aspect is Thrawn’s ship, briefly teased in small doses via recent trailers. But now, fans can get a much more complete view of the vehicle’s inside, albeit in concept art form.

New art fromAhsokawas revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2023 (as reported byThe Direct) and it shows off the magnificent interior of Thrawn’s ship. Laden with shining gold all around its impressively roomy bridge, it truly does appear to match the rather aesthetically-inclined Grand Admiral’s sensibilities. Those who have kept up with trailers and previews will no doubt recognize the front window, only now it’s given much more context with the rest of the room finally visible. Mix that roominess with the several stations occupied by droids, and it appears that Thrawn has a bit of a strategic stew going.

This look matches quite well withwhat long-time fans know of Thrawn as a character. First appearing in Timothy Zahn’s now classicStar WarsLegends novelHeir to the Empire, the blue-skinned Chiss admiral quickly became one of the most intimidating and oddly respected villains inStar Wars. This came from a number of qualities. For one, Zahn wrote him in such a way that even fans who had served in the armed forces noted how effective of a leader he was. But arguably his most notable attribute is his affinity for art, which he uses to creative and often deadly lengths.

As also demonstrated inStar Wars Rebels, with whichAhsokashares a notable connection, Thrawn studies the art of whichever culture he happens to be in conflict with at any given time. Seeing as he’s part of the oppressive Galactic Empire, that occurrence is unfortunately quite often. He uses this to effectively predict his opponents' strategies, which further ensures his lethality as an enemy. The main characters ofRebelslearned that the hard way, only pulling through when the young Jedi Ezra Bridger pulled off a daring gambit to jump himself and Thrawn in an unguided hyperspace jump.

This leaves things where they are now, withAhsoka’s story at least partially featuring Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano searching for her friend Ezra. The series will be the culmination of many years of stories involving Ahsoka herself, all the way back to the 2008 debut ofThe Clone Warsanimated series. So fans may want toprepare forAhsokain a big way as urged by the character’s original voice actress.
