WithDoom Eternalfresh in everyone’s minds, it seems like a good time to talk about the story and lore implications of the mythical Doom Slayer. Of course,Doomisn’t such a renowned franchise because of the quality of its story, but this incarnation tried more than some of the other games to includea lot of the niche lore tidbits.

Was it successful? Partially. A lot of it tries too hard. Still, there’s a lot of lore overlap revealed in this game, and some of it outright contradicts lore from pastDoomtitles. So let’s look into some of the stuff that doesn’t quite line up.

This first one is sort of a two-fer. Back in the original days ofDoom, ID software wasn’t all that concerned with maintaining consistency in the lore.Doomwas a game about shooting Hell’s Demons on Mars, so they figured people would see the narrative for what it was, and for the most part, they did.

But now that Bethesda has implied that the OG Doom Guy and the reboot Doom Slayer are the same person, it’s time to start asking questions. Questions like, didn’t Doom Guy die at the end ofDoom+back in the day? How has he barely aged after all these years, trips to hell, and hops across timelines?

9How Can A Man So Deep In Violence Not Get Covered In Scars?

Clearly, Doom Slayer is the ultimate badass. The guy loves bunnies, stands up to his superior officers, fights demons, and protects the Earth. In fact, he does such a good job that most Demons are straight-up terrified of him. But no warrior is perfect, and the most well-written ones seem to be covered in scars from their conquests.

Yet, thanks to the Marauder skin and various hints during the story, Doom Slayer has almost no scars from all his fights against demons. Yeah, sure, maybe the Praetor Suit completey protected him from cuts and stabs, but what about broken bones?

8Why Does He Look So Different Now?

In the originalDoom, The Doom Marine basically looked like B.J. Blazkowicz fromWolfenstein, in fact, he’s used the name as an alias on more than one occasion. Why is that? Well, Doom Guy is actually a descendant of the Nazi-Slaying Boogeyman himself and that just makes sense. But, as graphics got better and the series went on, Doom Guy started to look less and less like B.J.

Well, thanks to some obsessed fans who looked at ripped models and helmet reflections, we can see that Doom Slayer fromDoom 2016looked a lot like his original design while Doom Slayer in Doom Eternal looks pretty different, especially in his hairstyle. Now if they’re the same person, why would that be the case?

7Who Was Taking Care Of Daisy In The Original Doom? What Demon Knew About His Pet?

So this is a question that’s been asked ever since Daisy first popped up. Daisy, of course, is the rabbit Doom Guy owned who was brutally killed back duringDoom 1andDoom 2. But here’s the thing, why was Daisy on Earth if Doom Guy was on Mars? Who was babysitting the Doom Slayer’s rabbit? And what demon managed to find out that he owned a pet rabbit and hunt it down?

Obviously, this was just a silly little piece of lore back in the day, but now that its canon and the series has been rebooted, the lore experts have popped out of the woodwork to start asking questions.

6Is The Doom Guy Actually Smart?

Every single piece of evidence in the games leads us to believe that the Doom Slayer only has one thing on his mind at all times, and that’s slaying demons. Yet, as Bethesda tries to expand upon the series, they’ve started to make Doom Guy into an actual character with hobbies and passions.

Doom Eternalis the worst offender because they give the Doom Slayer his own room full to the brim with books, computers, tools, toys, guitars, andall the other secrets a player can find. We like that they included all the collectibles by putting them physically into the world. But, from a canonical standpoint, it makes it seem like Doom Guy built a shelf for all his toys and ignored the guitar made of Ardent Energy for the entirety of the game.

5Where Does He Keep The Weapons?

This is a microscopic critique, and one that’s applicable for 90% of shooters out there, but where does Doom Slayer keep all his guns? Modern games these days tend to keep the gun count low, restricting players to only a few guns at most they can use at any one time, butDoom Eternalisn’t like that. No,Eternalhas more buttons than before, with a chainsaw, the Flame Belch, two grenades, an Ardent Sword, two different shotguns, a rocket launcher, a rifle, a chain-gun (our favorite weapon), two unique BFGs, a plasma rifle, and a ballista.

That’s not even including the crystals, toys, albums, coins, attachments, ammo, and more that the Doom Slayer also apparently carries throughout a level. Again, usually, it’s something gamers easily ignore, but Doom Guy carries SO MANY things that it takes it to a whole other level.

4How Does He Survive Being Shot Out Of A Cannon?

This is incredibly obvious, but the Doom Slayer is a human. He’s just a human being who is insanely angry and dedicated to killing demons. He doesn’t have superpowers, he isn’t a mutated human, he’s just an angry soldier in an overpowered suit. So then how is it he can jump from any height, get shot out of a cannon, and keep himself clean?

The Praetor Suit is amazing, but it doesn’t have a G-force nullification function or an auto-cleaning subroutine. Yet in justEternalalone, Doom Guy shoots himself from a BFG10k, jumps off skyscraper-tall buildings with no cushion, and bathes himself in blood.

3Why Does The Chainsaw Use Gasoline?

So you might not know it, but the Earth inDoomandDoom Eternalis a more advanced civilization than our own by a pretty wide margin. It’s confirmed that this setting doesn’t even use gasoline as a fuel source anymore. And why would they? The whole conflict of the games is about a new energy crisis in the form of Ardent Energy.

But if that’s the case and gasoline is a bygone product, why does the chainsaw even take gasoline? It can’t be that old so there’s no reason why it wouldn’t be a “plasma cutter” or something like that. But old-fashioned chainsaws are just so much more visceral when it comes to Demon slaying, so perhaps this one can be forgiven.

2Why Do The Demons Still Even Bother?

In the codex of both this game andDoom 2016, its made abundantly clear that the Demons of Hell are straight-up scared of the Doom Slayer. The guy went rampant in their home killing them by the thousands for quite some time, so it makes sense.

In fact, the leaders and priests of this world found that the only way to stop the Doom Guy was to seal him in a cursed tomb rather than trying to kill him any longer. So if he’s that infamous, why do the demons even still bother? Why do none of them show fear or even caution in the face of certain “doom”? They think, don’t they?

1Does His Suit Clean Itself?

Finally, how in Hell’s name does Doom Slayer stay clean? The guy is constantly ripping demons apart with his bare hands or taking their parts from one area and shoving them into another.

By anyone’s logic the guy should be covered in viscera and gore by the end of the first mission, yet, every time we see him in cutscenes his suit is squeaky clean.
